Workday Feature Favorite: Org Studio

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

What is Org Studio?

Before I found out about Org Studio, our method to handle organizational changes included printing out org charts, and modeling the orgs in PowerPoint, or Excel. I would then painstakingly note down headcount movements and manually create positions as needed. Overall, the overhead effort was significant, and the manual steps involved were prone to inaccuracies in the form of missed moves which can be frustrating and time consuming.

Org Studio is my favorite feature in Workday!!! With Org Studio, you can create and design organization changes in real time because it uses an intuitive drag and drop UI that makes it easy to visualize and implement changes.

Let’s say you are tasked with updating role assignments for different supervisory organizations and the structure of your company is complex. How do you go about doing this? Assign roles manually? Assign roles via EIB? Among its many features, I want to highlight Org Studio’s ability to assign roles from the org design, a feature that was delivered shortly after 2021R2.

To enable this feature, you will need to have access from the “Maintain: Org Designs” domain. This will allow you to run the maintain org studio configurations task. The initial page of the task takes you to the assign roles tab where you can configure allowed organization roles that you can assign via Org Studio.

Once the allowed organization roles have been configured you can then start a new organization design. Choose an organization you want to assign a role to then click on actions > assign roles.

Add a new line, then add the role and choose the individual to be assigned.

As Org Studio is currently only available for Supervisory Organizations, the same applies for role assignments.
